Ballymena Youth Council survey
Ballymena Youth Council conducted a health/leisure survey on local young people in 1996/97 to determine their experience of drug use. A total of 206 young people aged between 11-12 (Year 8) and 15-16 years old (Year 11) from the Ballymena area took part in the survey.
Main findings
- 33% of Year 8 boys, 25% of Year 8 girls, 70% of Year 11 boys and 50% of Year 11 girls reported that they had been offered illicit drugs;
- 13% of Year 8 boys, 6% of Year 8 girls, 24% of Year 11 boys and 25% of Year 11 girls reported that they had taken illicit drugs;
- the most popular illicit drug was cannabis.
