The chill out room, 1997
The Londonderry YMCA carried out a survey in 1997 into recreational drug use by young people in the Waterside area of Londonderry.
The Waterside survey involved 255 final year students (15-17 years old) in three secondary schools.
Main findings
- 46% of respondents had consumed illicit drugs or solvents;
- 32% of respondents were offered drugs outside, eg in a park or street;
- 28% of respondents were offered drugs at school;
- 27% of respondents were offered drugs in disco/pub;
- 7% of respondents offered others drugs at school;
- 4% of respondents offered others drugs in youth club, on holiday or at parties.
