A survey of illicit drug use and its prevalence among young people in Dungannon was carried out in June 1995, covering 415 young people aged between 14-18 years. The overall response rate of completed questionnaires was 81%.

Main findings

• 38% of respondents reported having taken drugs;
• 22% reported continued use of drugs;
• 63% of those respondents still using drugs, used cannabis most;
• 30% of those using drugs were given them by their friends;
• the main drug being taken was found to be cannabis, closely followed by poppers.
