Newry and Mourne Drugs and Alcohol Partnership Drugs Research Forum, 2001

This research involved 145 students aged 16 years. A range of 17 second level schools and five training agencies participated in the research on drugs awareness, attitudes to drugs, availability of drugs, legal aspects, and services for drug users and their families in the Newry and Mourne area.

The sample group was made up of 17% from training agencies, 19% from secondary (controlled) schools, 22% from grammar schools and 42% from secondary (maintained) schools. The sample comprised 43.36% males and 56.64% females.

Main findings

  • 95.7% admitted to having used alcohol;
  • 28.2% had used alcohol by age 12 and 76% by age 14;
  • 83% stated that they were still using alcohol.
