Omagh post-primary schools supplementary survey, 1996

A sample of students in their final A level year at the three grammar schools in Omagh, and a sample of students from Omagh College of Further Education, were undertaken during 1996. The age range of students was 17-20 years. A total sample of 418 students was returned.

Main findings

  • 48% of the sample had been offered drugs. The most commonly offered drug was Ecstasy, followed by cannabis, poppers, LSD and speed.
  • 75% said they knew of friends who had been offered drugs.
  • 40% of the sample had tried drugs. Cannabis was the drug most commonly tried (38%), followed by poppers (23%), LSD (16%), speed, Ecstasy and magic mushrooms (all 7%).
  • 21% of the sample were current drug users. Cannabis was reported as the most used drug.
