Southern Health and Social Services Board survey into illicit drug use, 1993
This survey was carried out by the Southern Health and Social Services Board (SHSSB) in 1993. The sample of 1,344 young people came from further education colleges, youth clubs and Youth Training Programme (YTP) schemes in the SHSSB area. The sample represented almost 5% of the target population. Ninety one percent of the sample were aged between 14-19 and sample age range was
12-44, with a mean age of 17.
Main findings
- 51% of respondents had been offered drugs;
- 25% of respondents had tried drugs;
- 70% of respondents had friends who had tried drugs;
- 4% of respondents admitted to regular drug use.
The survey also showed that up to the age of 16, solvents were the main illicit substance of choice. From the age of 17, cannabis was the main drug of choice.
